She joined the Children’s Therapy TEAM family in 2008 and quickly gained a reputation for being a compassionate therapist with a vibrant personality. She is committed to going the extra mile for those she serves.
Reflecting on her 15 years of experience in the field, Whitney shares, “While I may have arrived at a point in my career when references to being a ‘veteran therapist’ fit, I’m still learning new things every day. I glean insights from each child I work with. Similarly, working with graduate students is an education for me as much as it is for the students. I’m grateful for being part of a profession and a company that fosters countless opportunities for me to learn and grow alongside those I’m serving.” Whitney served in the role of OT Clinical Education Coordinator at Children’s Therapy TEAM for 10 years before taking on her joint appointment with the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education.
When not working, Whitney is a busy wife and mother of three. Whitney enjoys time with family, rooting on her kids, and a good laugh.
Occupational Therapy for Kids:
10 Qualities Great Pediatric Therapists Have
So your child’s pediatrician, or maybe a teacher has recommended that you look into getting on occupational therapy evaluation for your child. But how do you choose the right one? Here are 10 qualities to look for in finding the right match for your child:
1. Friendly
“Pairing”, “establishing rapport”, “bonding”, these are all clinical terms we used to describe the importance of this therapist/child connection. Rita Pearson, a lecturer and educator with 40+ years of experience states: Kids don’t learn from people they don’t like. This mutual respect is the foundation for establishing a friendship that fosters the optimal learning environment.
2. Silly
Don’t we all need more humor in our lives? Pediatric OT’s work with kids. Kids are Hilarious! Pediatric OT’s need to be able to roll with the punches and be hilarious right back. Not to mention, humor is often a fantastic tool for diffusing tricky situations with cranky kiddos.
3. Experienced
Here at Children’s Therapy TEAM, we have many highly experienced therapists. And for those new, energetic therapists that are fresh out of school, TEAM also utilizes formal mentoring so new grads can continue to learn and grow with their own skills set.
4. Evidenced-Based
Curiosity and consistently reviewing the latest literature will ensure that all OT’s are up to date on all of the latest and greatest treatment techniques.
5. Collaborative
Children have so many different teachers. Parents, grandparents, classroom teachers, therapists, coaches, other family members…the list goes on and on. A good OT will take to the time to collaborate with all of these individuals as well as the child’s medical team to create the right plan of action for your child.
6. Creative
Exercises can be boring. Handwriting can be boring. OT’s love to search out new and creative activities to ensure that therapy is not just “work” rather it is FUN!
7. Adaptable/flexible
Adaptation is the key trait that sets OT’s apart from other therapies. So much of our grad school training involves analyzing activities and adapting either the environment or the task to set our clients up for success. Pediatric OT’s, in particular, have the special challenge of never knowing how a child will present each day: Happy, bouncy, sad, lethargic, high-interest areas suddenly changes focus from princesses to sharks…Good OT’s know how to roll with the punches to adapt each session to your child’s needs.
8. Patience
Patience is the hallmark of any service industry, particularly those service industries serving medical needs, and even more important for serving the needs of pediatric clients and their families.
9. Energetic
Enthusiastic praise, high fives, cheerleading jumps, chasing, basketball games, catch, all are in the job description. So make sure your child’s OT has her tennis shoes laced up and is ready to go!
10. LOVING
All children need love to grow! We pediatric OT’s LOVE OUR KIDDOS!
